Mr. Avery is an Arizona native and grew up in the Phoenix area. He began his self defense training with Sensei Mike Wall at Paradise Valley Karate in Shuri-Ryu in the Spring of 1990. In 1992 he began the transition, with Sensei Wall, to Ryu-Te Ren Mei under Taika Seiyu Oyata. Scott has regularly competed in tournaments at all ranks on a local and national level over many years. A variety of personal and family distractions, including missionary service abroad, keps him away from the dojo for a while, but he frequently explored many other systems including Judo, Kempo, Tai-Chi, and Tae Kwon Do. He eventually came "home" again to continue his training with Sensei Wall in 1999. In the Fall of 2000 Scott achieved his First Degree Black Belt in Ryu-Te. He is currently a Second Degree Black Belt and is studying Matsamura Seito Shorin Ryu with Sensei Wall under Sensei Phillip Koeppel. Mr. Avery has been happily married since 2001 and he has 3 young children. He enjoys reinforcing every day applications of Karate, especially with children, to help improve discipline, self esteem, physical fitness, and adjusting to adversity.
